The Final Step Complete Print Package

There are scientific studies that have proven that spaced repetition and unprompted recall are far superior to standard read and reread methods of studying. Research in three different papers published in the Journal of Memory and Languages, the Journal of Educational Psychology and the Psychological Bulletin showed that these more active forms of studying could provide results as high as 30% better than the typical read and highlight methods.

Throughout PA school I used these strategies to get me through. At the time I didn’t know the research. All I knew is that it felt like it worked better. One method I had was to put every note I took into question format. There must have been thousands and thousands of questions. Simple, easy, quick questions that could be reviewed over and over and over. That was the key. They could be used again and again.

Something else occurred to me during PA school. I noticed that I would remember answers to test questions I got WRONG. I would remember those entire questions and their answers for months. I wouldn't remember what I'd read that morning or what I'd heard in lecture an hour ago, but a test question I got wrong and then reviewed, that was mine forever.

That active engagement and a little bit of emotion would make it stick. There are studies showing that patients on Beta blockers have impaired memories. The hypothesis is that an increased heart rate and emotional response aids memory. It makes sense, of course, you'd want to remember where those saber tooth tigers lived. Your life depended on it.

When I started getting ready for my PANRE I began by using PANCE review questions. I figured these questions would give me a chance to use that same principle. Long PANCE questions are great, but they take way too much time. At a minute per question, I was never going to get through enough questions to cover all the material I needed. If my strategy of learning, by thinking through questions was going to work I needed to be able to get through 10-20x as many questions.

PANCE questions are great for assessing how much you know but they are just too long to use a "study" tool.

I looked and looked for something that would fit my strategy. Short, quick questions covering core content and with a single clear answer. I found a lot of free online questions like this, but I spent more time double checking the answers than going through the questions. I got so distracted frustrated and terrified that I might start remembering WRONG information that I gave up using them altogether.

Then I went back to what I did all throughout PA school. I wrote my own questions. As I took notes, I wrote questions. I took more notes, I wrote more questions.

I poured over those questions for months, taking out the vague and terrible ones, coming up with new ones that were more clear and concise. I used that first draft of The Final Step to pass my PANRE.

Since then thousands of PA-Cs have used The Final Step to help pass their exams. The questions have been refined by those PA's over the years to be quick, clear concise and accurate. It's been awhile since I needed it, but I still have a Mistake Finders Refund Policy in place. If you find a mistake at any time in The Final Step I will refund 50% of your purchase. That's how I make sure it's accurate.

So what do you get with the Final Step Complete Print Package?

  • Instant access to the Digital and Audio versions of The Final Step
  • The print version of the Final Step shipped directly to your door.
  • Over 1,200 single step questions that have been reviewed by thousands of PA-Cs...
  • Questions designed to be used with spaced repetition, over time. Not just once to test yourself at the end of a topic but over and over again.
  • The ability to study Cardio at the beginning and then use The Final Step to keep it fresh while you move through the rest of the Blueprint. (You can use this strategy with every topic, not just cardio)
  • A resource you can use every day for as little as 10 minutes to hold onto all of the material you're used to forgetting.
  • The use of a second sense (hearing) to boost your retention by using the audio version.
  • A boost in retention from questions using unprompted recall which forces your brain to work overtime...
  • Peace of mind after doing a thousand questions the day before your exam.
  • Questions organized by topic in part A to help you study. Then a totally random order in part B to simulate the test.
  • A resource for EORs? It wasn't designed for them, but from the feedback, there are hundreds of PA-S's out there who love The Final Step for EORs.

PAER Review Binder (PDF)

The entire Physician Assistant Exam Review website! All of the notes! Everything in one clean PDF!

It's about 1,000 pages so a physical copy would be a little tough to carry around.

The PAER Review Binder covers every topic on the NCCPA Blueprint. Everything I've put up on the website, cleaned up and in one place, right in your pocket.

Reading through the notes while listening to the podcast is a great way to add a second sense to your studying. The more senses you use the more likely you are to retain what you need on the Big Day.

The No More Test Anxiety Package

What is the #1 reason people fail the exam? Everyone thinks its content knowledge, but that's not it. I've spoken with hundreds of people who have failed the exam, and the majority of them fail because of one thing...

The lizard brain.

The lizard brain is the section of your brain that controls your fight or flight mechanism. It's a way to refer to the fear and doubt that starts small and grows into a huge fire-breathing dragon on test day.

You'll notice it when your heart starts beating a little faster when you go to register for your exam.

The little voice in your head begins whispering "You're not ready. Don't sign up yet. Push it back a little longer."

You manage to push the voice away and register for the exam.

The next day you wake, and you hear the voice again. "You won't be ready. You really don't remember much of anything." Surprisingly the voice is louder and MORE persistent.

The lizard brain is relentless, and it continues to grow stronger as you get closer and closer to exam day.

As the exam approaches it doesn't just get louder, it gets meaner and more desperate. "How are you going to tell your mom that you FAILED!? How are you going to tell your boss?"

You take practice tests, but it's hard to simulate the pressure and the strength of the lizard brain on test day.

Like a basketball player who has taken 1,000 free throws and then finds himself on the line in a tie game with 2 seconds on the clock.

You need a plan to deal with the lizard brain on test day.

The lizard brain is going to be armed and waiting for you at the testing center. Your heart rate will jump, you'll get a cold sweat going, and the spiral of negative thoughts will increase with each question you don't understand.

Or...

You could practice ahead of time. You could take the lizard brain on right from the start. Rather than try to hide from him, you could start playing offense. You could be armed and waiting for HIM on test day.

It takes a little thought. A little work ahead of time to build up your defenses, but it will be worth it when you stroll into the exam breathing easy with your heart safely inside your chest and beating at a normal rate. Quietly and calmly you'll be thinking over the techniques you've learned and practiced to deal with this situation.

Probably the best part is the great night sleep you're going to get the night before your exam. You're going to sleep like a baby, all snuggled up in your blankets and cozy the night before the exam. You're going to wake up peacefully knowing that you covered everything and you are in the best possible position to take and pass this test.

The No More Test Anxiety package will get you started with the book No More Test Anxiety (PDF version). This book will cover some basic strategies for taking on the lizard brain and winning. You'll also get access to a presentation I gave on anxiety management to a room full of PA-Cs getting ready for their exam.

Inside you'll learn...

  • What failing the PANCE really costs you and WHY you're so terrified even if you won't admit it... (Naming a thing gives you power over it)
  • A technique that will add ONLY 30 seconds to your study sessions, but change everything on test day
  • Instructions to create your own confidence card, which has been responsible for hundreds of PA-Cs getting a peaceful night's sleep the night before their exam...
  • A secret baseball players have used for over a hundred years to help them perform in high-pressure situations
  • Strategies to head off the lizard brain while he's still small and whispering in your ear. Long before he turns into the fire-breathing dragon. It's much easier to handle him at the beginning...

Maximize Your Time and Efficiency

Simple Techniques That Will Save You Time and Have You Lapping Your Classmates

MYTE is one of my favorite creations because it's the part that can have the biggest impact on you. It's the part that can take you from a C student to an A student. From an A student to the #1 student in your class.

I've spent 2 years researching, testing and experimenting with ways to improve how you work: study, write, read and most importantly remember.

This 9 part video course will put you right up at the top of your class. You'll work better, remember more and be doing it in less time than what you're already putting in. This course pays for itself with better grades, but also by giving you back time and control.

Working harder isn't always the answer. Sometimes there's a better way.

There's a story about a village that didn't have fresh water. The village decided to get together and hire someone to bring them fresh water every day. Two good candidates applied for the work, and the village members decided to hire both of them. They would pay for the water by volume, so it didn't matter to the villagers who brought it.

The first man went to the store and bought two buckets. The following day he marched down to the river and back all day long carrying water to the villagers. They were all very happy. The second man was nowhere to be found.

A month went by, and everyone was enjoying the new system. The first man was being paid well, and the village had clean water handy all of the time.

At the end of the following month, the second man returned, and a village meeting was called. The man showed the villagers the pipeline he had built from the river to their village. All the villagers had to do was turn the spicket on and fresh, clean water would be theirs. A gauge would keep track of the volume of water, and they could pay him at the end of each month for the water they used.

The first man, upset by this new development, bought two more buckets and got his sons to help him, but they could not keep up with the demand for water. They worked nights and weekends, but it made little difference.

At some point, there are no more hours to put in. At some point, you can't work any harder.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

You can't make more hours, but you can make better use of the hours you have.

If you feel out of control or out of time, we can put an end to that TODAY.

MYTE shares the best of what I've discovered over the past two years. The things that will have the biggest impact, but are also simple to implement. The techniques and ideas that will help get you working smarter

In MYTE you'll learn...

  • What I would teach on day one of PA school if I ran a PA program.  (absolutly pricess)
  • That grinding it out is the hard way. It can be so much easier. You don't have to muscle though it. You don't have to stay up all night. (infact that's about the worst thing you can do and I'll show what to do instead)
  • The formula (Time Studying = Better Grades) is a myth. There's a new formula thought of by a Georgetown professor that has quadrupled my productivity starting the day I saw it...
  • The best students get the best grades, NOT the smartest students. I'll show you how to be one of the best students without doing any more work than you already are...
  • How I got a 98% on our first anatomy test when over half the class failed. It had nothing to do with being smart...
  • Why you don't need more time...
  • Multitasking is a myth that's killing your productivity. An NYU researcher discovered some amazing things that you can use starting now to...
  • All about blocking. The best way to take advantage of the time you do have...
  • How you can use Harvard research to boost your scores by 20% by changing what you do with the last 5 minutes of each study session. Not an additional 5 minutes, just replacing what you do for the last 5 minutes...
  • To extend your attention span. Not only to improve studying but to improve performance on exam day...
  • Something earth-shattering to replace your to-do list with. (I've been doing this for 3 years now)...
  • How to easily decide what to work on next and not waste time floundering with indecision...
  • To keep things from slipping through the cracks. As a student, a parent and a full-time PA this is one seriously important lesson...
  • The biggest mistakes people make when creating a study plan and what to do instead...
  • Learn the first 5 things that need to go into your study plan. If you don't have these you're missing out...
  • To start feeling like you're making progress. One of the hardest issues is to keep up motivation. It always feels like your swimming in circles. Not anymore...
  • The best ways to use the NCCPA Blueprint and how to cover it all. It's an amazing resource if you...
  • How to know when you're done studying and be confident heading into your exam that you've done your best and that you're ready...

Get It All Done Without Losing Your Mind

Wondering how to get your work done from home? Wondering how to keep the distractions out when you can't go to the library? How do you do your best work with all of the crazy people in your house? That's exactly why I created this video series. I struggled for years, trying to get it together. Working around my kids and my family every weekend. Trying to get PAER built without losing my mind. Well, let me tell you I've tried it all. Apps, calendars, planners I've tried them. I've moved my "office" more times than I can count.

But because I struggled for so long, I can show you a quicker way to get there. Everyone has to figure it out, but I can make it so much faster and so much easier. I can keep you from throwing tantrums when people interrupt you and give you back some free time so you can spend time with those people you love. The best part of this package is that you get MYTE and Get it All Done Without Losing Your Mind. These two go together like peas and carrots and you are gonna be a rockstar!

Before COVID-19 Sent everyone to their homes, I was planning on putting together a studying course. Instead, I thought, "Gee wiz, a study course would be helpful, but do you know what would be really helpful? Teaching how to do it from home amidst the choas." So, I took some major themes from that study course and added in a huge chunk of doing that work in your house with a bunch of other people living there. And just like that Get it All Done Without Losing Your Mind was created and I can't wait to share it with you.

In Getting it All Done Without Losing Your Mind, you'll Learn ...

  • Why task lists suck and two different ways to get through the work you need to do. I swing back and forth between these two. You might like one better and stick with that
  • What do before you start your day that will Guarantee it's a success.
  • The surprising place that most distractions come from and how to deal with them.
  • The thing I teach students who fail the PANCE that keeps them on track to pass when they're at their lowest and have lost all motivation.
  • Breakthrough solutions to keep your kids and everyone else from bugging you while your working. (I'm using this one right now)
  • Exactly what to do when your nice pretty schedule turns into a dumpster fire. We'll get you back on track in no time.
  • The single most important thing you need to take care of to get you through isolation
  • Five "no brainer" ways to stay motivated and get your work done
  • The best philosophy out there for getting work accomplished. Ever wonder how some people don't seem to put in the time that you do. You think they're smarter, but I doubt. It's way more likey they've been using this philsophy.
  • The first thing to do in crisis management (I'm always looking for the 80/20 principle and found it right here)
  • A sneaky little trick to use so that you can look back on your day and say, "wow, I got so much done," instead of "where did the time go? I've got so much more to do "
  • How to squeeze every minute out of your day. (Hint: it's easier than you think)
  • The secrets of leveraging your brain. I'm going to show you how to unleash what you know you have locked away between your ears.
  • A complete description of how I set up my day to get everyting I need accomplished. (at least the the most important things)
  • How to "stack the deck" when you sit down to study and ensure that you're going to crush it.
  • A pearl of wisdom from the man who saved England from being overrun by the Germans during WWII that will keep your mind at it's best when everything is pulling you in a million different directions.

Still Can't Decide? Maybe These Nice Folks Can Help

Just wanted to thank you for your study tools. I gravitated to your podcast and audiobook along with AAPA review book as I felt these concentrated on the core concepts the test would require. With these and the NCCPA samples tests I felt well prepared. I am currently working GI clinic and my wife and recently opened an indoor cycling and yoga studio so my time is quite limited. I would listen to your podcasts and questions while driving to and from the studio and walking my dog between classes.

I'm slow test taking and typically the last to finish a test. I felt I failed my PANCE and first PANRE when I took them but fortunately passed. With this PANRE, I sailed through the questions with time to spare and felt solid on the first 3 sections (I will admit the 4th was wickedly hard)....10 years!

Just wanted thank you,

Gerald PA-C

I think this is the real secret. Far beyond just learning topic content. I really believe you've somehow found more than a 24 hour day. I loved the course, Thank you!

- Karen PA-C

I have been listening to your podcasts for one and a half of the two years I was in PA school and I used the final step the week leading up to my PANCE as a final review. I just wanted to let you know that I just found out that I passed my exam and I am so relieved! Thank you for all that you do!

Sincerely,

Andrea PA-C

Hey Brian, I was an Anatomy and Physiology college instructor for 12 years before going to PA school. I was use to giving tests, not taking them! I took the PANCE for the 3rd time last week and finally PASSED!! WooHoo!! You are correct, its not the content knowledge that is the reason for failing the exam (twice), its learning how to take the test. Good time management and keywords are huge! Thanks for what you are doing!

- Alan

I want to thank you for all your efforts and hard work on Final Step!! I have taken this darn test more times than I care to remember (I've been practicing as a PA for more than 20+ years) but I went into the test feeling comfortable and came out of the exam feeling comfortable with my answers. I felt like I was listening to your Final Steps audio and trying to answer the questions before I heard them in my earphones. That was how the exam felt as I was taking it. I had already formed the answer in my head before I got to the multiple choice answers and there the answer was... But more important than Final Step were your emails telling/encouraging me how to study for the exam. I would read, listen to lectures/Final Step and then answer practice questions every time I studied and this worked great for me!! Thanks again. I passed my exam and won't need to take this test for another 10 years but will miss hearing Final Step on my long walks in the evening or in my car. LOL

Tony PA-C

I took my first PANRE a week ago and just found out that I passed!! I just wanted to thank you for your motivational daily emails and The Final Step book/study guide. I used the audio version of The Final Step in the car all the time. There definitely were key term questions on the exam that I remembered from the Final Step! I have recommended your study guides to other fellow PAs preparing for the PANRE! Hope you are still doing this 10years from now when I take the recertification again!

Thank you, Melanie

First, let me just say thank you…for everything!

You asked to pick just one thing so I will, but know how difficult that is for me, as there is just so much I have gained from MYTE that I could go on all day (but I won’t….not right now at least!).

So, the best thing I learned overall is the value of TIME—or should I say, learning how to be... (she did go on for about a page here but you get the point)

Thanks so much for all your help, you are great!

- Allie

I just wanted to let you know that I took my PANCE last week and I passed! I only discovered your podcast in February of this year but I have been listening ever since and find it SO HELPFUL! It is a great review of important topics and was perfect to listen to on long drives to clinical rotations. I wish I had found it sooner!

I also purchased The Final Step while studying for boards. It was a great study tool! I used it before and after study sessions (kind of like your questions in your podcast!) and to solidify things and sum up what I had studied. It was perfect. I also used it while going on walks with classmates to keep us moving while studying- they loved it as well!

Overall, I just want to say thank you for what you do! I know it takes a lot of time and preparation and at the end of the day, all of the hard work you put in benefitted me, someone you've never met and probably never will. So thank you!!

Gratefully, Carlie

I just wanted to let you know I passed my PANRE after studying primarily from your podcasts and The Final Step! I'm a full-time GI PA and have 3 kids, which keeps life busy both in and out of work. I was worried I wouldn't have enough time to study but tried to do the best I could when I could. Your podcasts were just the right thing I needed for my commutes to and from work. I also used The Final Step pdf and audio version during my last week of studying.

Thank you so much for creating these amazing resources! I'm an audio learner, and all the pearls, as well as study tips, you provided, really helped jog my memory and retain a lot of info.

Hanna PA-C

The Final Step is a great PANCE or PANRE study aid for reviewing key words or concepts. I utilized it as an integral part of my PANRE review system. Thanks again - Paula Phelps, MHE, PA-C Physician Assistant Program Director and Department Chair Idaho State University PA Program.

The MYTE program provided me with the framework I was desperately seeking for my exam preparation. Before I found MYTE, I was spending hours in passive study and felt that I really wasn't retaining what I needed. Brian's program focused and maximized my time, making it far more productive. The MYTE program increased my confidence exponentially and most importantly, I PASSED MY PANRE! I really wish I had access to the program when I was in PA school! Brian's podcasts and the MYTE program were the foundation of my PANRE study plan. Thank you Brian for creating these resources!

- Maureen

My friends and I used your book to study. Each one of us studied individually, then used your book to reinforce what we learned with each system and quiz each other. I was the last one to take the test, and now WE HAVE ALL PASSED. -Amelia, Amy and Claire

I passed my PANRE last week. I used your podcast and audiobook of questions as my only study source!-Eric, PA-C

Great way to review what I studied using immediate recall. Passive learning just doesn't cut it, but this book does.-Jamie, PA-C

I passed!! Thank you so much for all the lectures and your book it really helped me out :-) -Nancy

Your book was awesome. I did the questions multiple times and made sure I knew those in and out. -Francesca
